Feichten im Kaunertal is the beating heart of the Kaunertal valley in Tyrol, Austria. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,287 meters, it is a quiet alpine retreat that balances rugged nature with a warm village atmosphere.

Description and accommodation

Feichten is the main town of the Kaunertal, characterized by traditional Tyrolean architecture and surrounded by peaks over 3,000 meters high. It is a prime destination for those seeking a vacation away from the crowded tourist centers. Whether you are looking for a vacation home with a rustic feel or a modern mountain villa, the village offers a variety of options.

You will find numerous serviced apartments and holiday homes with "alpine chic" interiors, often including private balconies with glacier views and infrared saunas. Many apartments are part of family-run complexes that offer a "bread service" where fresh local pastries are delivered to your door every morning - perfect for a peaceful stay.

History

Feichten's history is deeply linked to its geography. Traditionally a community of mountain farmers, the village has preserved its cultural heritage through the local history museum, which exhibits old mining tools and mineral collections.

It was once an important mining area (the historic Knappensteig or miners' trail bears witness to this). In the mid-20th century, the construction of the Kaunertal Glacier Road transformed the village from a remote farming village into a world-class destination for high-alpine tourism.

Nature and activities

Feichten is the gateway to the Kaunergrat Nature Park, a protected area renowned for its biodiversity, including Austria's largest ibex colony.

Kaunertal Glacier

The Kaunertal Glacier offers skiing from September to June. The journey up via the Panorama Road features 29 hairpin bends and crosses six climate zones.

Hiking and climbing

With over 250 km of trails, you can enjoy everything from the family-friendly Verpeilschlucht gorge to the summit of the Weißseespitze (3,518 m).

Wellness and stargazing

Quellalp is a modern wellness center in the village center with a spring water pool and extensive sauna facilities. As one of the "darkest" regions in Austria, Feichten also offers incredible views of the Milky Way, which are often explored on guided night hikes.

Typical dishes

Tyrolean cuisine is hearty and designed for mountain life. In the local taverns and mountain huts (Alms), you should try:

Tiroler Gröstl: A pan-fried dish with potatoes, onions and speck (bacon) topped with a fried egg.

Kaspressknödel: Flat, pressed cheese dumplings served in a clear broth or with sauerkraut.

Schlutzkrapfen: Crescent-shaped pasta filled with spinach and ricotta, drizzled with browned butter.

Kaiserschmarrn: Shredded caramelized pancakes served with plum compote (Zwetschkenröster).

Festivals and traditions

Feichten stays true to its roots with seasonal festivities:

Almabtrieb (Autumn): The traditional "cattle drive", where decorated cows return from high pastures to the valley.

Christmas markets: On the Saturday before Christmas, the village square is transformed into a festive hub with local crafts, wood carvings and the scent of mulled wine.

Kirchtag: Village festivals celebrating the anniversary of the local church, often with brass bands and traditional Kirchtagskrapfen (sweet pastries).
